Background
Matthias holds a Master’s degree in Computer Science from the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) and a Bachlor’s degree in Applied Computer Science from University College Gent (Hogeschool Gent).
He works at the Computer Science department of the VUB as a PhD student with a grant of the Fund for Scientific Research – Flanders (FWO). At the VUB, Matthias is affiliated with the AI Lab and the SOFT lab (formerly PROG), respectively through his promoter Prof. Dr. Luc Steels and his co-promoter Prof. Dr. Theo D’Hondt. During the second half of 2008 and the summer of 2009 Matthias worked as a research trainee at the Sony Computer Science Lab (CSL) in Paris.
At Sony CSL, Matthias was involved in the NoiseTube project, which aims to create a collaborative platform for monitoring and mapping urban noise pollution. Additionally, Matthias has been involved with the artist collective Nogo Voyages from Paris to create novel locative storytelling experiences.
His principal research interests are participative sensing, citizen science, ubiquitous computing, geographical information systems and sustainability.
