Matthias holds a PhD in Sciences and a Master’s degree in Computer Science from VUB, and a Professional Bachlor’s degree in Applied Computer Science from University College Ghent (Hogeschool Gent). While at the Software Languages Lab Matthias was part of the BrusSense team, which he co-founded with Ellie D'Hondt. BrusSense is also affiliated with the VUB's AI Lab. During the second half of 2008 and the summer of 2009 Matthias worked as a research trainee at the Sony Computer Science Lab (CSL) in Paris.
At Sony CSL, Matthias was involved in the NoiseTube project, which aims to create a collaborative platform for monitoring and mapping urban noise pollution.
In June 2012, Matthias obtained his Doctorate with a thesis entitled Community memories for sustainable societies - The case of environmental noise.
