Modern applications run on many heterogeneous machines at once, from sensors and smartphones to clusters, and more and more of them need to be non-negotiably reliable. Building them requires combining different programming, communication, coordination, and consistency paradigms, each with its own bugs and maintenance issues. Instead of tackling this heterogeneity within an existing mainstream language, this research programme investigates new foundations for reliable multi-paradigm network-centric programming.
