wePoker is a multi-player poker game for Android that allows colocated people to play a game of Texas Hold’em poker. wePoker does not need a connection to the internet, everything happens using local communication technology. On newer devices, wePoker will even use Wifi-Direct and NFC!
The initial version of wePoker was developed in 48 hours during the V-Hack Android Hackathon contest by the AmbientTalk team of the Software Languages Lab of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel. It won the Belgian edition and received the second prize at the European final in London.

The goal of wePoker is to make as much possible use of available Android hardware to give users the best poker experience
without being connected to the internet and with as less setup as possible.
The picture above shows wePoker running on two Android phones and a Google TV.

It allows to play poker in multiplayer on the move using:
  • All phones.
  • Phones acting as hands and a tablet acting as the poker table.
  • Phones acting as hands and a Google TV acting as the poker table (see picture).

Players can join the game as follows:
  • Detecting an active wePoker game in a WiFi network automatically
    • either using a common WiFi access point,
    • or, if phones support, it using a direct WiFi connection.
  • Scanning a QR code, which can be displayed on any device active in the game (or printed).
  • Scanning an NFC tag (which can be written by any NFC-enabled device active in the game).
  • Being invited by another player by beaming when two phones are brought together.

Long train ride? No internet? No problem!
